ITINERARIES
Morocco Itinerary Guides: 5, 7, 10 & 14 Days
Sample day-by-day routes for the most common trip lengths, built around what actually works logistically, from a short desert escape to a full country crossing.
How to Use These Itineraries
Every trip we build is fully customized, but these four sample routes reflect the lengths and structures that work best logistically for the most common Morocco trip goals, from a short desert escape to a full country crossing. Use them as a realistic starting point, adjustable to your own dates, interests, and pace, rather than a fixed package.
5 Days: Marrakech & the Sahara
The tightest realistic route that still includes a proper Sahara Desert night. Days 1-2: Settle into Marrakech, explore the medina and souks, visit Jardin Majorelle. Day 3: Drive over the Atlas via Tizi n’Tichka, stopping at Ait Ben Haddou, continuing toward the desert. Day 4: Arrive in Merzouga, camel trek into the dunes, desert camp overnight. Day 5: Sunrise over the dunes, drive back to Marrakech (or fly out from a nearby airport if available). See our short desert tour options for variations on this route.
7 Days: The Classic Highlights Route
The most-booked length, and our general recommendation for first-time visitors. Days 1-2: Marrakech. Day 3: Cross the Atlas via Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate. Day 4: Continue via the Dades or Todra Gorges toward Merzouga. Day 5: Desert camp, camel trek, sunrise over the dunes. Day 6: Drive back toward Fes or Marrakech, depending on your route direction. Day 7: Final sightseeing and departure. See our full 7-day Morocco tour for a detailed version of this route.
10 Days: Imperial Cities, Desert & Mountains
Enough time to properly combine the imperial cities with the Sahara and add real mountain time. Days 1-2: Marrakech. Day 3: Atlas Mountains and Ait Ben Haddou en route to the desert. Days 4-5: Merzouga, including a full desert camp night and a rest morning. Day 6: Continue to Fes via the Middle Atlas, stopping in Ifrane. Days 7-8: Fes, exploring the medina and tanneries. Day 9: Chefchaouen or a coastal detour via Essaouira, depending on route direction. Day 10: Return and departure. Our multi-day tours include several 9-10 day variations on this structure.
14 Days: The Full Country Route
For travelers who want genuine depth rather than a highlights reel. Days 1-3: Marrakech, with a day trip into the Atlas or Ourika Valley. Days 4-5: Cross to the Sahara via Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, and the Dades Gorges, with two nights in the desert. Days 6-7: Fes, exploring the medina in depth. Day 8: Chefchaouen. Day 9: Tangier, or continue toward the coast. Days 10-11: Essaouira or Agadir for a coastal rest stop. Days 12-13: Return to Marrakech, with time for a hammam, cooking class, or a second Atlas Mountains excursion. Day 14: Departure. This length also comfortably accommodates a multi-day desert walking expedition in place of a standard single-night camp.
How to Choose the Right Length
If you only have a long weekend or are combining Morocco with a wider Europe trip, the 5-day route delivers the essentials without overreaching. Most first-time visitors with a full week to spare do best with the 7-day classic route, which balances the imperial cities, mountains, and desert without feeling rushed. Ten days lets you add real depth to either the north or the coast, and two weeks is where Morocco genuinely opens up, enough time to slow down, add a multi-day trek or desert expedition, and avoid the trap of spending more time in the car than in any one place.
Good to Know
- Every route above is a starting point, not a fixed package — pace, stops, and length are fully adjustable
- Longer routes generally direct one-way (e.g. Marrakech to Fes) rather than backtracking, covering more ground without retracing the same roads
- Building in a rest day, especially on 10+ day routes, prevents the trip from feeling like constant driving
- Desert nights can be extended to 2+ nights or upgraded to a multi-day walking expedition on longer itineraries
- Solo travelers, couples, and families can all follow these same route structures, adjusted for pace and accommodation style
Frequently Asked Questions
7 days is our general recommendation for first-time visitors, balancing the imperial cities, Atlas Mountains, and Sahara Desert without feeling rushed.
Yes, every itinerary we build is fully private and customized around your dates, interests, and pace. These routes are starting points, not fixed packages.
For 10+ day trips, a one-way route (e.g. Marrakech to Fes) generally covers more of the country than a loop back to your starting city, without retracing the same roads.
Five days is enough for a focused Marrakech-and-Sahara trip, but not enough to add the imperial cities or the north. It works well as an add-on to a wider Europe trip.
Combining Marrakech, the Sahara, Fes, the north (Chefchaouen and/or Tangier), and a coastal stop gives the most complete picture of the country in 14 days.
