Marrakech to Merzouga: How to Get There
Distance, drive time, route options, and what to see along the way — everything you need to know about traveling from Marrakech to the Erg Chebbi dunes.

Marrakech to Merzouga covers roughly 560 kilometers (about 350 miles) by road, and takes approximately 9 to 10 hours of actual driving time via the most common route over the Tizi n’Tichka pass. In practice, almost no one drives this in one sitting: the road itself passes through some of Morocco’s best scenery, and the standard, and strongly recommended, approach is to split the journey over 2 to 3 days, stopping at Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, and the Dades or Todra Gorges along the way.
The Route: What You Pass Along the Way
Over the Tizi n'Tichka Pass
Leaving Marrakech, the road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka, Morocco’s highest major mountain pass at 2,260 meters. The drive is genuinely spectacular, winding through Berber villages and terraced valleys, but also involves real hairpin turns and drop-offs that are not something we recommend self-driving for visitors unfamiliar with mountain roads.
Ait Ben Haddou
A UNESCO World Heritage kasbah and one of Morocco’s most photographed sites, roughly 3.5 hours from Marrakech. Famous as a filming location for Gladiator and Game of Thrones among many others, it is a near-essential stop on the route, not a detour.
Ouarzazate
Known as the “door to the desert” and home to Morocco’s film studios (Atlas Studios), Ouarzazate is a common lunch stop or overnight base partway through the journey.
Dades & Todra Gorges
Dramatic river canyons with towering rock walls, both worth a stop or an overnight if you have the extra day. The Dades Gorge’s switchback road is one of the most photographed roads in Morocco, and the Todra Gorge offers a narrower, more dramatic canyon walk.
How Long Should You Take?
2 days: Marrakech to an overnight stop near Dades or Todra, then on to Merzouga the next day, a common choice for shorter itineraries. 3 days: Adds a full day around Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate before continuing, giving a more relaxed pace with time to properly explore each stop. One-way vs round-trip: Many travelers continue from Merzouga onward to Fes rather than backtracking to Marrakech, covering more of the country without retracing the same road twice, which is how most of our Morocco desert tours are designed.
The drive itself, through the High Atlas, is part of the experience.
How to Travel From Marrakech to Merzouga
There is no train or realistic direct bus option that reaches Merzouga in reasonable time or comfort. CTM buses do run the route but take significantly longer than driving and involve multiple stops. Self-driving is possible with a rental car, but the mountain roads, particularly the Tizi n’Tichka pass, are genuinely demanding for drivers unfamiliar with them, and you would miss the flexibility to stop properly at Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, and the gorges along the way.
A private driver is, by a wide margin, the way most visitors make this journey, and the way every one of our desert tours is built. It means a knowledgeable driver who knows the road, flexible stops built around your interests rather than a fixed bus schedule, and a genuinely more comfortable, more scenic version of the same journey.
Good to Know Before You Go
- The Tizi n'Tichka pass can occasionally close for short periods after heavy winter snow — build in flexibility if traveling December through February
- Ait Ben Haddou is best visited in early morning or late afternoon light for photography, and to avoid tour bus crowds
- Fuel and rest stops are frequent along the route, but food options thin out beyond Ouarzazate
- The full one-way drive can be done in a single long day, but splitting it over 2-3 days is far more enjoyable and is what we recommend
- Consider continuing one-way to Fes from Merzouga rather than backtracking to Marrakech, to see more of the country
