Merzouga vs Zagora vs Agafay: Which Moroccan Desert Is Right for You?

Merzouga, Zagora or Agafay? A Sahara-born local compares dunes, drive times and who each desert suits, so you can choose the right trip.

Quick answer: Choose Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) for real, high Sahara sand dunes and the classic camel-and-camp night. It is a long drive from Marrakech, so plan at least 3 days. Choose Zagora if you want a shorter trip with a desert feel but much smaller dunes. Choose Agafay for an evening or overnight near Marrakech: a stony desert landscape, not sand dunes.

Merzouga: the classic Sahara

Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga with a camel caravan

Erg Chebbi is the Sahara most people picture: tall golden dunes that change colour through the day. I grew up in Merzouga, at the edge of these dunes, and it is still the desert I recommend most.

The classic way to experience it is a camel ride at sunset, a night at a desert camp, and an early start to watch the sunrise from the dunes. Away from city lights, the night sky is something guests talk about long after the trip (see our Sahara stargazing page).

Merzouga is far from Marrakech, so we split the drive over two days, via Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge. The road becomes part of the trip instead of a long day in the car.

Zagora: shorter, smaller dunes

Zagora is closer to Marrakech and gives you a real desert atmosphere: the palm groves of the Draa Valley, kasbahs along the road, and a night in the desert. The dunes are much smaller than in Merzouga, so it suits travellers who have only two days rather than those who want the big Sahara dunes. We arrange Zagora trips privately on request.

Agafay: the desert next to Marrakech

Agafay is a rocky, stony desert less than an hour from Marrakech, with views of the Atlas Mountains on clear days. It is not a sea of sand dunes, so don’t expect the Sahara. It works well for a sunset and dinner, or a first taste of the desert if your time is very short.

Which should you choose?

  • 3+ days and you want “the Sahara” → Merzouga
  • 2 days only → Zagora (we arrange it privately) or Agafay
  • Half a day → Agafay
  • Honeymoon → Merzouga, for the private dinner in the dunes

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a stony desert, not sand dunes.

Technically, but it means very long driving days. We recommend 3 days minimum.

Merzouga: it is the farthest from city lights, and the nights around the new moon are the darkest.
