Fes to Marrakech via the Sahara: Route, Stops and How Many Days You Need

The Fes to Marrakech desert route day by day: Ifrane, Merzouga dunes, Todra Gorge, Ait Ben Haddou. How many days you need, from a Sahara-born local.

Quick answer: The classic way to travel from Fes to Marrakech is not the direct road but the desert route. You cross the Middle Atlas, sleep in the Sahara at Merzouga, pass the Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley, and cross the High Atlas via Ait Ben Haddou. It takes at least 3 days. With 5 or 6 days you get a second desert night or a guided day in Fes and Marrakech.

The route, day by day

Day 1: Fes → Merzouga (Middle Atlas and Ziz Valley)

Leave Fes early and climb into the Middle Atlas. You pass Ifrane, a mountain town with alpine-style houses, and the cedar forests of Azrou, where monkeys can often be seen. After Midelt the road follows the Ziz Valley, a long ribbon of palm groves and earthen villages. You reach Merzouga in the late afternoon, then ride a camel into the dunes of Erg Chebbi at sunset. Dinner, music and a night at the desert camp.

Day 2: Merzouga → Dades Valley (Todra Gorge)

Tall cliffs of the Todra Gorge between Merzouga and the Dades Valley

Wake up for sunrise over the dunes. I grew up here, and it is still the moment I would never skip. After breakfast, return by camel or 4×4 and drive west to the Todra Gorge, a narrow canyon with tall cliffs, for a short walk. Continue to the Dades Valley, known for its rock formations and winding road. Night in the valley.

Day 3: Dades Valley → Marrakech (Ait Ben Haddou and the High Atlas)

Drive through the Valley of Roses and Ouarzazate, then visit Ait Ben Haddou, the old earthen kasbah village. In the afternoon, cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, stopping at viewpoints, and arrive in Marrakech in the evening.

Is the direct road faster?

Yes. If you only want to get from Fes to Marrakech, the direct road or the train is quicker. But you would miss the Sahara completely. The desert route turns the transfer into the highlight of the trip.
